New Zealand Police advance Operation Hark sexual assault re-investigations

New Zealand Police are nearing the conclusion of the re-investigation phase of Operation Hark, an inquiry into adult sexual assault and child protection files. The operation was launched in May following concerns regarding the handling of a historical sexual abuse case in Northland.

After reviewing nearly 1,000 files, authorities identified 57 cases for re-investigation. A team of more than 45 specialist investigators has been working to engage with victims and their families. The re-investigation has uncovered 11 instances where further alleged offending occurred after the initial reports were made to police.

To date, two men have been charged. A 59-year-old man from the Far North appeared in the Kaitaia District Court facing charges of indecent assault on two girls, while a 53-year-old man appeared in the Kaikohe District Court on multiple charges including unlawful sexual connection and indecent assault.

Detective Superintendent Keith Borrell stated that nine cases have yet to be formally resolved, but a plan is in place to conclude them quickly. Additionally, police have initiated extradition proceedings in three cases involving suspects believed to be living overseas, with further prosecutions expected in the coming weeks.
