New Zealand Police urge road safety during long weekend
New Zealand Police are advising motorists to exercise caution on Eastern District roads during the upcoming long weekend, which includes the Hawke’s Bay Anniversary and Labour Day. Acting Inspector Andy Knox noted that high traffic volumes are expected as people travel to holiday destinations.
Police are conducting fatigue stops along State Highway 5 near Mōhaka and State Highway 2 in Central Hawke’s Bay in partnership with Roadsafe Hawke’s Bay. Authorities have already recorded over 500 vehicles passing through a fatigue stop in Wairoa. Drivers are also warned of potential traffic congestion in Wairoa due to a large tangi scheduled for Saturday.
