New Zealand political parties face pressure ahead of 2026 election
New Zealand's political landscape is intensifying ahead of the 2026 election following recent polling that shows both major parties facing challenges. In the latest TPU-Curia poll, the National Party fell to 29 percent, while the Labour Party recorded 25.9 percent.
Labour has launched a campaign focused on the economic and social record of the National-led Government. Campaign chair Kieran McAnulty argued that rising unemployment and increasing Jobseeker Support numbers indicate that the country cannot afford another three years of National leadership. Labour specifically highlighted that the Government is on track to miss its welfare reduction target by approximately 80,000 people.
In response to the polling, Labour leader Chris Hipkins stated his team will move to the “front foot” by presenting their own policy cases rather than focusing solely on opposition. Meanwhile, National leader Christopher Luxon has criticized Hipkins' leadership, claiming the Labour leader is “honestly flailing” following the recent poll results.
