New Zealand prepares for Cook Islands clash in Christchurch

New Zealand faces the Cook Islands in a crucial Rugby League World Cup 2026 match in Christchurch. Following a narrow 24-22 opening defeat against Australia, the Kiwis must win their remaining games to secure a spot in the knockout stages.

The New Zealand squad will be without fullback Kalyn Ponga, who suffered a broken arm during the match against Australia. Keano Kini is set to replace him in the lineup, alongside other changes including Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad at centre and Xavier Willison and Scott Sorensen in the second row.

The Cook Islands, coached by Karmichael Hunt, seek their first-ever win over the Kiwis after a loss to Fiji in their opening match. The Cook Islands lineup features debutant Valentine Holmes at full-back and Brad Takairangi at half-back.

For New Zealand players Jamayne Isaako and Tanner Stowers-Smith, the match serves as a homecoming to Christchurch, where both played their junior rugby league.
