India secured a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I of a five-match series at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Chasing a daunting target of 226, the visitors achieved their highest successful run chase in T20I history, reaching 230/6 with two balls to spare.

Sanju Samson led the charge with a rapid 67 off 33 balls, including eight boundaries and four sixes. Abhishek Sharma contributed 29 off 12 balls during an explosive opening stand that reached 94 runs. Despite a middle-order collapse triggered by the spin of Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, captain Shreyas Iyer (42) and Naman Dhir (42 not out off 15 balls) stabilized the innings to seal the win.

Earlier, New Zealand posted 225/8, fueled by Glenn Phillips’ unbeaten 82 off 40 balls and a brisk 45 from Finn Allen. While the hosts' batting was dominant, India's bowling struggled to contain the scoring in the latter overs, with Axar Patel conceding 51 runs. India now holds a 1-0 lead in the series, with the second T20I scheduled for Saturday in Christchurch.
