New Zealand primary sector recognized in agriculture and food awards
New Zealand’s primary industry and food sectors have been recognized through recent academic and commercial awards. At the Massey Agriculture, Horticulture and Environmental Science Awards in Palmerston North, over 250 students, staff, and industry representatives gathered to honor excellence in agricultural, agribusiness, and environmental sciences.
Agriculture Minister Todd McClay addressed the students, emphasizing the importance of the sector. The top honor, the William Gerrish Memorial Award, was presented to Vetekina Pau’u, an international student from Tonga.
In the commercial sector, Tora Collective won the Gold Primary Sector Award at the New Zealand Food Awards for its Caught-to-Order Wild Crayfish. The judges highlighted the company’s sustainable coast-to-plate model and use of seaweed packaging. Silver was awarded to Re Probiotic Yoghurt, while Waitoa Bone Broth received the bronze for its use of low-value by-products.
