New Zealand protests against attempted port privatization

Protesters in New Zealand, organized by the group New Zealanders for A Democratic Economy (NZDE), gathered outside the Christchurch City Holdings Limited (CHCHL) building to oppose plans to privatise assets, including the city port. The demonstrators argue that the move threatens democratic control of public infrastructure.

The rallies were supported by union representatives Mark Wilson and Gerard Loader of the Maritime Transport Union, as well as Amnesty International activist Claire Coveney. Participants cited broader concerns about government secrecy and the erosion of democratic oversight.

The protests have drawn attention to the contested privatisation proposal and have been reported by local journalists and commentators.
