New Zealand pushes energy transition with 2050 grid plan and plug‑in solar approval

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) released two scenarios for New Zealand’s energy system in 2050. The “SHIFT” scenario emphasizes flexible demand, extensive battery storage and lower costs, projecting reduced peak electricity use and greater emission cuts. Experts such as Emeritus Professor Ralph Sims and Associate Professor Michael Jack noted the importance of demand‑side flexibility and the need for early investment in batteries and renewable integration.

Separately, the Ministry for Regulation completed a review recommending the legalisation of plug‑in solar panels, a system that allows renters and apartment dwellers to install photovoltaic modules without rooftop access. Regulation Minister David Seymour said the change could be enacted within nine to twelve months, aligning New Zealand with markets like Germany and the UK and potentially outpacing Australia, where federal approval is still pending.
