In Canterbury, mayors are still divided on how to merge the region’s ten councils before the government’s August 9 deadline. Timaru Mayor Nigel Bowen says South Canterbury councils are aligned on a proposal, while Christchurch and Selwyn remain hesitant. Submissions closed after receiving over 840 responses, and the regional council is slated to be dissolved in 2028 under nationwide local‑government reforms.
