New Zealand releases updated science and social sciences curriculums

New Zealand Education Minister Erica Stanford has released updated Science and Social Sciences curriculums for Years 0 to 10. The new framework aims to provide greater clarity on what students will learn at each year level, focusing on practical knowledge such as civics and financial education. The Social Sciences curriculum will cover human history, ancient civilizations, and New Zealand history, including Māori, settler, and migrant experiences.

Experts have offered mixed reactions to the science updates. While some noted the curriculum provides a reasonable overview of key concepts and thoughtful scaffolding, others expressed concern regarding the structure. Dr. Michael Edmonds of the University of Canterbury noted that the reduction of science into only two strands—physical and biological—omits chemistry as a separate, integrating discipline. Additionally, educators have raised concerns regarding the presentation of New Zealand history within the social sciences document.

In a separate educational announcement, the government is expanding the Early Intervention Specialist Service (EISS). Starting in September, alternate providers will deliver up to 1,000 EISS placements nationwide at any one time to support children with complex developmental needs. This expansion is part of a multi-year investment in learning support following the 2025 Budget.
