New Zealand Rugby considers player movement for Super Rugby Pacific
New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has signaled a potential shift in policy regarding player movement to revitalize the Super Rugby Pacific competition. NZR chief Steve Lancaster indicated the organization is open to discussions with Rugby Australia and the Rugby Players Association about relaxing strict rules that currently require Test players to remain on home soil to maintain All Blacks eligibility.
This potential change aims to address financial struggles and declining competitiveness within the competition. The league is expected to feature 10 teams next season following the disbanding of Moana Pasifika and the folding of the Melbourne Rebels. NZR officials noted that a lack of meaningful competition could ultimately impact the global competitiveness of the All Blacks.
In related roster developments, the Hurricanes have announced their 2027 squad, featuring 10 new recruits including Semisi Tupou Ta'eiloa and Bryn Hall. Meanwhile, New Zealand clubs have finalized their wider training groups (WTG) for the 2027 season through a nine-round draft process designed to highlight emerging talent.
