New Zealand Rural Health Package Announces Funding for Ultrasound Training and Workforce Support

The New Zealand government unveiled a rural health package aimed at improving care in remote communities. The initiative includes NZ$2.5 million to fund point‑of‑care ultrasound training and support, funding for Primary Response in Medical Emergencies (PRIME) training, and NZ$6 million to expand the National Rural Recruitment and Locum Support Service.

Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey said the program expects at least 140 rural clinicians to receive ultrasound training over the next three years and will remove the NZ$2,000 cost barrier for PRIME training, enabling roughly 150 more clinicians to upgrade emergency‑care skills. Rural Health Network chief executive Grant Davidson emphasized that “improving rural health outcomes requires investment in the people delivering care,” while network chair Dr Fiona Bolden highlighted how ultrasound access can speed diagnosis and reduce unnecessary travel for patients.
