New Zealand rural sectors voice concerns and support ahead of 2026 election

As the 2026 general election approaches in New Zealand, rural stakeholders are expressing diverse views on economic and regulatory policies.

Mark McCarthy, owner of McCarthy Transport in Marton, highlighted significant challenges facing the rural economy, specifically citing skyrocketing diesel prices and inadequate investment in rural road maintenance. McCarthy noted that while major expressway projects have been successful, rural infrastructure often suffers from poor construction and high repair costs. He also emphasized the need for employment growth and the retention of local processing capacity following the closure of the Winstone pulp and paper mill.

In contrast, Federated Farmers has expressed support for the ACT Party’s ‘Make Farming Fun Again’ policy platform. Federated Farmers president Colin Hurst stated that the party’s proposals to cut red tape, protect private property rights, and implement new permitted activity standards align with the organization’s vision to increase farm productivity and economic growth. Additionally, the group welcomed commitments to long-term funding for the eradication of wilding pines and pest control.
