New Zealand school attendance reaches decade high
Associate Education Minister David Seymour has reported significant improvements in New Zealand's school attendance and enrollment metrics. Data indicates that school attendance reached a decade high in the second term of 2026. This follows government initiatives supported by $140 million in funding from Budget 2025, which includes $123 million dedicated to frontline attendance services.
Regarding non-enrolled students (NENs), the Ministry has closed 11,579 cases in 2026, a figure higher than any comparable period since 2016. Additionally, NEN re-enrolment cases requiring intensive support increased from 400 in Term 1 to 4,100 in Term 2. The government has also seen growth in the charter school sector; as of July 1, 2026, 1,732 students are enrolled across 17 charter schools, up from seven schools and fewer students the previous year.
