New Zealand sees record rise in second-hand consumer spending
New Zealand is seeing a significant rise in second-hand consumption. According to Trade Me’s sixth annual Circular Economy report, 89% of New Zealanders purchased a pre-loved item in the six months prior to March 2025. The highest engagement was recorded in Marlborough and Southland, where 97% of residents reported buying second-hand goods. Primary drivers for this trend include cost savings (71%), environmental concerns (25%), and a desire for quality (17%).
This shift is also reflected in the global design industry. A survey by the online marketplace 1stDibs found that 36% of items sourced by design professionals in 2025 were vintage or antique, marking the highest share since 2021. The use of pre-1920s antiques specifically rose to 63% of sourced items. Locally, Auckland-based auction house Webb’s has seen growth in its specialized mid-century and antique sales through its online platform, The Estate.
