Research by Pure New Zealand found that 53 % of surveyed Britons identify as “maxx‑packers”, travelers who cram as many activities as possible into a trip. This has helped spark the “runcation” trend – holidays built around race or running events combined with other high‑octane activities.

A fitness journalist tested the concept with a 13‑day road trip across New Zealand’s South Island, including a 50‑km, 2,600‑m climb trail race in Central Otago as part of the Northburn 100. The itinerary also covered Timaru, Dunedin, Queenstown, Glenorchy, Te Anau, Wanaka and Christchurch, illustrating the intense, activity‑focused holiday model.
