New Zealand sees tourism surge due to Lord of the Rings filming
Filming for the upcoming movie ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ has triggered a surge in tourism to New Zealand. According to the travel portal Expedia, worldwide accommodation searches for Wellington have increased by 70 percent since production began in July.
This phenomenon, referred to by the industry as ‘anticipation travel,’ sees tourists visiting filming locations before a movie is even released. The new film, directed by Andy Serkis and produced by Sir Peter Jackson, Dame Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, is not expected to hit cinemas until late 2027.
Expedia data indicates that 27 percent of travelers interested in film-related tourism wish to visit the world of Tolkien, outperforming other major franchises like ‘Emily in Paris’ (21 percent) and ‘Yellowstone’ (18 percent). Wellington remains a central hub for these visitors, offering access to various iconic locations used in previous Middle-earth adaptations.
