New Zealand shortlists provider for Taranaki LNG terminal

The New Zealand Government has shortlisted a preferred provider for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Taranaki. According to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise (MBIE), the proposed facility would utilize a moored vessel capable of storing LNG and regasifying it for distribution into the transmission pipeline, supported by a second vessel to transport the fuel from suppliers.

MBIE stated that the project will not proceed unless a safety case is accepted by WorkSafe. The ministry noted that while risk management zones are unlikely to impact Ngāmotu Beach or the surrounding community, the developer must still coordinate emergency response plans with civil defense and Port Taranaki. Final decisions regarding the contract are expected to be made following the next election.

The Smart Energy Alliance has criticized the government’s handling of the procurement process, describing the disclosure of a preferred supplier as “sneaky and secretive.” Spokesperson Gareth Williams raised concerns regarding the lack of public scrutiny over costs, the absence of an independent business case comparing LNG to renewable alternatives, and the timing of the announcement close to an election.
