New Zealand signs contract to redevelop Scott Base in Antarctica

Antarctica New Zealand announced that the main construction contract for the Scott Base redevelopment has been signed with Wellington‑headquartered firm LT McGuinness, moving the project into its delivery phase. The redevelopment follows a reset of the programme after the previous plan was paused when it proved unaffordable. Cabinet approved the detailed business case in May 2026 and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Finance authorised the project to proceed in July.

Chair Leon Grice said the contract marks the successful completion of the reset and will deliver a modern, fit‑for‑purpose research station. The upgraded base will expand from about 5,000 m² to roughly 6,500 m², adding a new Base Services Building, refurbishing the Hillary Field Centre, and replacing ageing water, wastewater and power infrastructure. A major wind‑farm upgrade and battery storage system will boost renewable energy generation and grid stability for both Scott Base and the nearby U.S. McMurdo Station.
