New Zealand solar farms compete with dairy farming for land

In New Zealand, the economics of solar energy are increasingly competing with traditional agricultural land uses. While land use has historically shifted from sheep to dairy and forestry, solar farms are now being integrated into the landscape.

Approximately 2,000 hectares of land have been consented for solar farms, with an additional 10,000 hectares currently under consideration by investors. This shift is evidenced by the conversion of dairy farms in Taranaki and south Canterbury to accommodate renewable energy infrastructure.
