New Zealand students recognized for environmental and scientific innovation
Students in New Zealand have received recognition for environmental and scientific achievements. The Ōrewa College Enviro Group won the Rangatahi Leadership category at the Tāmaki Makaurau Zero Waste Awards. The group was honored for restoring a local estuary and implementing waste reduction programs, such as soft plastic recycling and food waste reduction, within their school.
In Southland, Aroha Ridzuan of Southland Girls High School won the NZAS Premier Science Award at the 2026 NZAS Southland Science and Technology Fair. Her project investigated using chemical extracts from mānuka and kānuka to create stickers that extend food freshness. Additionally, Sam Lyness from James Hargest College received the Premier Technology Award for developing a device designed to generate hydroelectricity to complement solar panels.
