New Zealand survey shows public preference for renewable energy over LNG

A new Talbot Mills survey, commissioned by Rewiring Aotearoa and 350 Aotearoa, indicates that New Zealanders significantly favor renewable energy investment over liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure. When asked how $1 billion in energy security spending should be allocated, 57 percent of respondents chose renewable generation and storage, while only 12 percent supported an LNG terminal in Taranaki.

The data suggests a strong desire for government-led long-term planning. Approximately 63 percent of participants favor a binding, long-term National Energy Strategy to accelerate the renewable transition and reduce household power bills, compared to 21 percent who prefer leaving energy development to market forces.

Cost reduction remains a primary concern for voters. Nearly 70 percent of respondents stated that long-term solutions to lower energy and transport costs would be a critical or main factor in their voting decisions. This preference for renewables and long-term strategy was observed across various political affiliations.
