New Zealand to introduce digital product labelling standards
New Zealand Regulations Minister David Seymour has announced changes to product labelling requirements following a review by the Ministry for Regulation. The reforms aim to reduce compliance costs for exporters and importers while unlocking economic potential.
A key component of the announcement is the development of a national standard for digital labelling. While digital labels will not replace physical labels, the new standard will clarify which information can be conveyed digitally. This allows for real-time updates to product information and frees up space on physical packaging. The digital labelling recommendations are estimated to generate approximately $111 million in net benefits over 10 years.
Additionally, New Zealand will align its labelling requirements for over-the-counter (OTC) medicines with Australian standards. Retail NZ Chief Executive Carolyn Young noted that these changes will make it easier for companies to manage products in various markets and ensure New Zealand remains competitive as global standards shift toward digital information.
