New Zealand unemployment hits 11-year high as rate climbs to 5.6%
New Zealand's unemployment rate rose to 5.6% in the second quarter of 2026, the highest level since the third quarter of 2015. Statistics New Zealand reported 171,000 people unemployed, with 69,300 of them out of work for more than six months. The labour‑force participation rate increased to 70.7%, while overall employment grew 0.5% quarter‑on‑quarter and the labour‑cost index accelerated to 0.7%.
Inflation remained at 4.1% and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand lifted the official cash rate to 2.5% in July, signalling a tightening bias. The data prompted markets to ease expectations for another rate hike, with the NZD/USD pair slipping and the implied probability of a further RBNZ move falling to about 85%.
Trade unions and business groups warned that the rise in joblessness, especially among youth and Māori/Pacific peoples, could deepen economic hardship, while concerns about transport‑sector hiring practices and substance use added to the broader labour‑market risk picture.
