New Zealand updates American foulbrood management plan
The New Zealand government is updating the National American Foulbrood Pest Management Plan to address significant biosecurity challenges within the apiculture sector. Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard stated that the updates are industry-driven improvements intended to facilitate quicker identification and containment of the bacterial disease.
American foulbrood affects honeybee larvae and necessitates the destruction of infected hives. The sector is valued at approximately $426 million annually in exports and provides essential pollination services for the broader primary industry.
The revised plan includes enhanced identification of bee colonies and laboratory samples, improved reporting protocols for changes in hive ownership, and more robust compliance tools for repeat breaches. The government aims to maintain education and support as primary responses while minimizing additional paperwork and costs for beekeepers.
