New Zealand updates Skilled Migrant Category residency rules

Immigration New Zealand is implementing significant changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) effective 24 August 2026. The updates introduce two new structured pathways alongside the existing points-based system to address labor shortages.

The Skilled Work Experience Pathway is aimed at professionals with at least five years of total experience, including three years in a relevant skilled role and two years of work in New Zealand at a salary of at least 1.1 times the median wage. The Trades and Technician Pathway requires a Level 4 qualification or higher, two and a half years of post-qualification experience, and 1.5 years of work in New Zealand at the median wage.

Under the updated points system, New Zealand qualifications will now attract points, and overseas bachelor’s and postgraduate certificates will receive more generous weighting. Additionally, the validity period for English language tests will extend from two to five years for those with eligible professional registration.

Occupations are categorized into specific lists: an 'amber list' includes roles like chefs, bakers, and IT support technicians who may face additional requirements, while a 'red list' includes restricted or blocked professions such as hairdressers and beauticians.
