New Zealand uses genomic DNA to track invasive species

New Zealand is utilizing genomic technology to enhance its efforts against invasive species that threaten the nation's biodiversity. Scientists and conservation agencies are using DNA analysis to track the movement and origins of predators such as rats, stoats, ferrets, weasels, and possums.

This scientific approach aims to address the challenge of re-invasion, where animals from neighboring areas repopulate zones that have already been cleared. By reconstructing animal movements through DNA, conservationists can design more precise interventions rather than relying solely on traditional methods like traps and bait.

This initiative supports the national Predator Free 2050 program, which seeks to eliminate invasive rats, possums, and mustelids from the country by mid-century to protect native fauna that evolved in isolation.
