New Zealand voter enrolment rate drops below previous election levels

The New Zealand Electoral Commission reported that the provisional voter enrolment rate for the 2026 general election stands at 93.6 per cent. This figure is lower than the final rates recorded in 2023 (94.7 per cent) and 2020 (94.1 per cent). Nearly 3.8 million people have enrolled to date.

Specific demographics show varying trends. The enrolment rate for voters aged 18 to 24 is 74.2 per cent, an increase from 53.9 per cent in July but slightly below the 76.7 per cent recorded in 2023. Among voters of Maori descent, the rate is 85.9 per cent, with 603,968 individuals enrolled, up from 567,012 in 2023.

Advance voting has seen an increase, with 309,876 people casting votes in the first three days of the voting period, compared to 235,515 during the same period in 2023. Chief Electoral Officer Karl Le Quesne noted that the figures reflect awareness of new enrolment requirements and stated the commission will review enrolment efforts and report to parliament following the election. Official results are expected on November 27.
