New Zealand's Christopher Luxon Rules Out Working with Opportunity Party

National Party leader Christopher Luxon told reporters that his party is unlikely to work with the Opportunity Party, describing the stance as a "very, very strong position." He cited Opportunity's flagship policies – a universal basic income of up to $370 a week and a land tax of 1.75% on urban land and 0.5% on rural land – as reasons for the refusal.

Opportunity is polling at 4.7% in the latest RNZ‑Reid Research poll, just shy of the 5% threshold needed to enter Parliament, and has said it would consider supporting either National or Labour to form a government. Luxon stopped short of ruling out any governing arrangement altogether, but emphasized that National would not "do business" with a party promoting such tax increases.
