New Zealand’s Deer Overpopulation Threatens Native Forests

A new report from the University of Canterbury, led by Emeritus Professor David Norton, warns that soaring numbers of wild deer are causing irreversible damage to New Zealand’s native forests. Deer browsing is degrading both old‑growth and regenerating forests, stripping understory vegetation, altering soil and litter, and jeopardising biodiversity, water catchments, carbon storage and long‑term forest regeneration.

The study notes that while the impacts are gradual, they could prevent seedlings from establishing, leading to a future collapse of forest ecosystems. In response, the New Zealand government has launched pilot projects to help landowners reduce deer numbers and passed legislation creating “herds of special interest” that protect certain deer populations. Researchers argue that a coordinated national deer‑control strategy is needed, prioritising biodiversity and climate‑change resilience, with eradication in priority conservation areas and managed hunting elsewhere.

Stakeholders—including hunters, conservationists, farmers, iwi and government agencies—are urged to cooperate to protect the country’s forests for future generations.
