New Zealand's Future Linked to Pacific Peoples in New Book
The Helen Clark Foundation has published the edited collection *Facing Up to Our Future: Challenges and Choices for New Zealand*, overseen by Emeritus Professor Peter Davis. A chapter authored by University of Auckland pro‑vice‑chancellor Pacific Fonoiā Professor Jemaima Tiatia‑Siau and Seiuli Angel Timali Tiatia‑Siau argues that Pacific peoples are central to the country’s future prosperity, social cohesion and leadership.
The authors note that Pacific communities contribute roughly NZ$8 billion annually to GDP, but that their broader economic, caregiving, volunteering and cultural contributions are not captured by traditional measures. They also highlight persistent inequities: over‑representation in low‑paid work, under‑representation in senior leadership, lower home‑ownership and income rates, and the compounded effects of climate pressures across the Pacific region. The chapter calls for policy settings to keep pace with the fast‑growing Pacific demographic as New Zealand approaches the 2026 election.
Murray Grimwood’s review of the book and a related symposium at Massey University underscores the broader debate on New Zealand’s long‑term direction, emphasizing the need for inclusive, evidence‑based policy to address these challenges.
