New Zealand's Macraes Mine ships $3.8 million gold bar to Australia
A gold bar weighing about 17 kg and valued at US$3.8 million was dispatched from New Zealand to Australia. The bar represents the six‑millionth ounce of gold extracted from the Macraes mine, the country's largest and longest‑operating gold mine, which is owned and operated by OceanaGold. The transfer was overseen by New Zealand Resources Minister Shane Jones, who visited the site.
Because New Zealand lacks large‑scale refining capacity, the bar will be taken across the Tasman Sea to the Perth Mint in Australia for purification and conversion into standard international gold bullion. The shipment required a sealed, heavily guarded convoy. The event highlights the growing importance of the mining sector to New Zealand's economy and OceanaGold's plan to extend the mine's life, targeting an additional one million ounces over the next seven years.
