Newark Palace Theatre approved for safety upgrades and book-themed mural
Newark and Sherwood District Council approved two applications for the Grade‑II listed Palace Theatre in Newark, Nottinghamshire. One application authorises a new mural on the wall between the National Civil War Centre and the theatre, with a book theme to celebrate the Newark Book Festival. Council officer Oliver Scott and councillors, including Labour member Linda Tift, praised the design and discussed whether the mural should feature local authors or 1920s titles.
The second application covers internal safety improvements. Planned works include new catwalks above the upper‑balcony box seats, upgraded lighting rigging, additional safety ladders and replacement of the stage safety curtain, which was found to contain asbestos. Earlier upgrades last year added LED stair lighting, new flooring and façade repairs.
