Newborn dies in Guerrero hospital following surgical delay

A newborn has died at the General Hospital of Chilapa de Álvarez in Guerrero, Mexico, following a three-hour delay in an emergency cesarean section. The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) has documented instances of obstetric and institutional violence in the case, noting that medical personnel delayed the surgical intervention despite previous studies identifying an obstetric emergency that threatened the infant's life.

According to the CNDH investigation, the mother was admitted to the emergency area on January 25, 2025, due to childbirth complications. Although medical staff identified the need for a cesarean, the procedure was delayed for three hours, leading to fetal distress. Furthermore, the CNDH reported that instead of being transferred to a pathological nursery for specialized supervision, the infant was sent to a standard accommodation area with the mother.

The CNDH has called upon IMSS-Bienestar to provide full reparation to the affected family and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences. The incident has renewed debates regarding medical negligence, the lack of specialized personnel, and the absence of effective protocols within the public health system.
