Newborn murder case in Duque de Caxias, Brazil leads to couple's arrest

Police in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, arrested a couple accused of killing their newborn son in the Jardim Primavera neighborhood. According to the 60ª Delegacia de Polícia, the mother concealed her pregnancy, went into labor at home, and after the baby was born she allegedly asphyxiated the infant by pressing a shirt against its face and squeezing its neck. The father later placed the baby's body in a plastic bag and concealed it in a room, eventually burying it in the yard.

The infant was discovered when medical staff at Hospital Municipal Adão Pereira Nunes, where the mother was taken after complications, questioned the parents about the child’s whereabouts. The couple confessed to the homicide, which was classified as qualified murder. Both remain in custody pending further investigation.
