Newborn survives brain tumour discovered via fingernail infection

A newborn baby, Joey, survived a brain tumour that was discovered by doctors after they noticed a tiny, sand-like infection under his fingernail. The discovery occurred in 2020 in Penicuik, Midlothian, after Joey began experiencing jaundice, weight loss, and intermittent twitching.

Following the diagnosis, Joey underwent three brain surgeries and nine rounds of chemotherapy. The medical interventions were necessary to remove the tumour and address scar tissue that had caused him to suffer more than 30 epileptic seizures a day. Joey also participated in clinical trials to assist researchers in understanding chemotherapy treatments for infants.
