Newburgh, Indiana Highlights Growing Home‑Based Food Vendor Scene
The Town of Newburgh, Indiana, recently highlighted a number of local home‑based food vendors, describing them as hidden gems. Under Indiana’s Home‑Based Vendor (cottage food) law, entrepreneurs can legally prepare and sell certain non‑hazardous foods directly from their homes, at farmers markets, community events, and by shipping within the state.
Allowed items include breads, cookies, cake pops, candies, honey, maple syrup, whole fruits, nuts, jams made with high‑acid fruits, and certain mushrooms. Prohibited items are meat, salsa, pickled or acidified foods, canned goods, and any product requiring refrigeration. Vendors must label each product with the producer’s name and address, ingredients, net weight, processing date, and a statement that it was made in a home kitchen not inspected by the Indiana Department of Health, and must hold an ANSI‑accredited food‑handler certificate. Sales must be made directly to consumers, not wholesale to grocery stores.
