Newcastle, Australia neurosurgery waitlist forces patient to seek private care

Jayden Dipper, a 22‑year‑old from Lake Macquarie, began experiencing severe headaches, dizziness and blurred vision. After being misdiagnosed with migraines, an MRI performed by Dr Leo Valansi at Mount Hutton revealed a Chiari malformation, a structural defect where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal.

Dipper sought treatment through the public system at John Hunter Hospital, but the neurosurgery outpatient waitlist can be up to five years, with a median wait of about 1.45 years and 4,384 patients already on it. Unable to secure a timely referral, he was advised to obtain a private specialist, requiring him to raise funds himself. Doctors also advised him to stop heavy lifting, affecting his landscaping business.

The case highlights the challenges faced by patients in Newcastle’s public hospital system in accessing specialist neurosurgical care and the reliance on private treatment when public wait times are extreme.
