Newcastle City Council adopts 10-year cultural roadmap

Newcastle City Council in Australia approved a 10‑year Cultural Plan covering 2026‑2036. The plan aims to ensure affordable creative spaces, stronger support for local artists, investment in live music, nightlife and community infrastructure, and to embed First Nations leadership across cultural life. Lord Mayor Gavin Morris said culture shapes neighbourhoods and future aspirations, while Councillor Jenny Barrie highlighted consultation with over 70 stakeholders that underscored the need for accessible venues and sustainable career pathways. The council will also work with the NSW Government to explore the feasibility of a Creative Land Trust to secure long‑term space for artists and cultural organisations.

The roadmap sets short, medium and long‑term goals, targeting city‑wide cultural accessibility, inclusion and economic growth through a vibrant creative sector by 2036.
