Newcastle Council divided over infrastructure versus political advocacy

Newcastle councillors are divided over whether the council should prioritize local infrastructure or engage in broader political advocacy. Independent councillor Mark Brooker has proposed a motion to investigate the administrative costs and staff time dedicated to non-jurisdictional matters.

Brooker argued that focusing on advocacy diverts resources from essential services requested by residents, such as repairing potholes, maintaining footpaths, upgrading sports facilities, and managing playgrounds. He suggested that Newcastle's agendas have become too similar to state or federal parliamentary transcripts compared to neighboring councils like Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, and Maitland.

In response, Greens councillors, including Joel Pringle, criticized the motion. Pringle argued that the cost of staff advocacy is minimal relative to the council's $458.8 million operating budget and suggested the motion was a misdirected effort.
