Newcastle identified as potential site for AUKUS nuclear submarine base

An independent, crowdfunded inquiry led by former Labor minister Peter Garrett is scrutinizing Australia's multibillion-dollar AUKUS submarine agreement. The inquiry aims to address a perceived lack of formal parliamentary oversight regarding the nearly $400 billion commitment to acquire eight nuclear-powered submarines.

Newcastle and Wollongong have been identified as potential sites for hosting AUKUS submarine bases. While a benefit-cost analysis suggests a Newcastle base could be worth approximately $150 million to the region—potentially creating 3,000 to 5,000 highly skilled jobs and driving port upgrades—the proposal faces significant local concerns.

Potential drawbacks include the possible loss of the Port of Newcastle's container terminal project, fluctuations in property values, and the risk of cities becoming military targets due to the presence of submarines powered by highly enriched uranium. Analysts noted that residents may perceive the base similarly to a nuclear power station.
