Newcastle Jets ban Newcastle Herald soccer reporter

The Newcastle Jets have enforced a ban on James Gardiner, the Newcastle Herald’s long-time chief soccer reporter, preventing him from attending club-sanctioned media briefings.

The club stated in August that they did not want Gardiner to attend media opportunities following reports published by him and other Herald journalists regarding late payments to various Newcastle businesses, organizations, and individuals earlier this year.

In an open letter, Newcastle Herald editors Lisa Allan and Chris Dutton expressed disappointment, stating that a ban on one reporter constitutes a ban on the publication itself. They emphasized their commitment to independent journalism and confirmed that the Herald will continue its coverage of the team despite the challenges posed by the decision.
