Newcastle Knights achieve historic attacking turnaround in 2026

The Newcastle Knights have achieved one of the most significant attacking turnarounds in rugby league history, moving from a 14.1 points per game average last season to 26.4 points per game in 2026. This represents an increase of 12.3 points per game, the fourth-largest seasonal offensive improvement recorded in the sport.

Central to this resurgence is the recovery of five-eighth Fletcher Sharpe. Following a severe injury in June 2025 against the Dolphins that resulted in ruptured kidneys and a damaged spleen, Sharpe spent months bedridden. After a difficult pre-season, he has successfully transitioned into a key playmaker within the Knights' new attacking structure.

The team's revamped offensive strategy, led by players including Kalyn Ponga, Dylan Brown, and Justin Holbrook, has moved away from traditional halfback control in favor of a more fluid system. Despite facing South Sydney in an elimination final without several key players, the Knights enter the post-season following a major statistical and competitive renaissance.
