Newcastle Knights reach NRL Grand Final after historic turnaround

The Newcastle Knights have reached the 2026 NRL Grand Final, marking a significant turnaround for the club. This achievement follows a preliminary final victory over the Penrith Panthers and represents a rare feat in the NRL, as the Knights are only the second team in the era to reach the decider the season after finishing last on the ladder.

The club’s resurgence is attributed to major organizational changes implemented at the end of 2025, including the appointments of CEO Peter Parr and director of football Chris James. Head coach Justin Holbrook, who was selected from a competitive candidate pool for his clear attacking vision, has been credited with fostering a positive culture centered on the mantra: “You can’t wait to win to be happy, you need to be happy to win.”

Star fullback Kalyn Ponga has emerged as a central leader for the team, noting his personal growth and increased sense of responsibility. The Knights are set to face the Sydney Roosters in the Grand Final, a matchup that mirrors the 2010 season when the Roosters also transitioned from last place to the championship game.
