Newcastle residents launch app to track parking rangers
A group of Newcastle residents is preparing to launch 'Rangr Dangr', a live, community-powered map designed to alert users when parking rangers are on patrol. The initiative was inspired by a local business group chat used to warn others of nearby enforcement.
The app development follows reports of high parking fine costs in the region, which are set by the state government. Fines can range from $140 for overstaying to $704 for unauthorized parking in disabled spots. According to the City of Newcastle’s 2024-25 financial statement, the council collected more than $7.4 million in parking fines.
One founder noted that some residents have calculated that paying fines is more cost-effective than paying for parking. In response to the community's concerns, a City of Newcastle spokesperson stated that their EasyPark app already provides notifications to drivers 15 minutes before their parking time expires.
