Newcastle student leads national research on youth perspectives

Elsie Strahorn, a Year 10 student at Hunter Valley Grammar School, is conducting an independent national research project to investigate how students in years 9 to 12 understand the concept of a ‘fair go’.

Inspired by a sociology course at the University of Newcastle, Strahorn noted that existing data often relies on adult perspectives, which may not represent the views of younger generations. With guidance from a professor, she designed a survey sent to approximately 1,400 schools and educational organisations. The study aims to collect at least 1,000 responses by October 23 to better understand youth perceptions of success and equality.
