Newcastle transport contract extended with Keolis Newcastle

Transport for NSW has announced a one-year extension of the Newcastle Integrated Services Contract with Keolis Newcastle, extending the agreement for bus, light rail, and ferry services until mid-2028.

Labor MPs Tim Crakanthorp and Sonia Hornery have criticized the decision, advocating instead for the return of transport operations to government control. Ms. Hornery noted that the end of the Newcastle Buses contract has been known for a decade, while Mr. Crakanthorp expressed continued opposition to the privatisation of the network.

Transport Minister John Graham previously expressed frustration with Keolis Newcastle, citing widespread criticism regarding poor service delivery, specifically concerning bus cancellations, on-time performance, and high levels of fare evasion. Transport for NSW Coordinator General Howard Collins stated the extension aims to provide certainty for passengers and operators while preparations continue for the next phase of service.
