Newcastle Transport warns of dangerous light rail near misses

Newcastle Transport has issued a warning to the public following a series of alarming near misses involving the light rail. Keolis Hunter general manager Arsene Durand-Raucher noted that despite seven years of operation, dangerous behavior from both motorists and pedestrians continues to pose significant risks.

Tram drivers reported high levels of stress caused by pedestrians jumping onto tracks or rushing in front of moving vehicles. Durand-Raucher emphasized the physical limitations of the vehicles, stating, "the reality is, trams can't stop quickly," and warned that emergency braking can cause injuries to passengers on board.

Nationally, Australian rail regulators reported five fatalities, 17 injuries, and 893 near hits at railway crossings in 2025. In response to these ongoing safety concerns, NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison will attend a memorial service at the Australian Railway Monument in Werris Creek to honor rail workers.
