Keegan, who led the club from the brink of relegation to the top of the Premier League, passed away following a battle with stage four cancer. Former players and staff, including Warren Barton and Lee Clark, have spoken of his profound impact on the club and the city, noting that he restored the team's belief and identity.

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle described Keegan as a phenomenal impact on the club and a source of inspiration. In addition to the tribute, the club confirmed Dan Burn as captain and Joelinton as vice-captain for the season.
