Newcastle waterfront workers launch industrial action

Waterfront and electrical workers at a Newcastle coal loader have commenced industrial action following a breakdown in negotiations regarding pay and working conditions. The dispute involves employees at the NCIG Kooragang terminal, who are currently utilizing bans, limitations, and two-hour stoppages.

The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) states that workers are seeking an updated enterprise agreement to replace one that has been in place for over 16 years. MUA Newcastle branch secretary Glen Williams noted that members are lobbying for fairer rostering, improved recognition for public holiday work, and wage increases to address the rising cost of living.

Union representatives argue that the current conditions do not reflect the skills and productivity of the workforce, claiming that NCIG employees are paid less than comparable workers at neighboring operations despite delivering significant value to the business.
